Sedimentary rock
Rocks have been broken down for millions of years by wind and water. The pieces of earth are washed away into streams, lakes, oceans and rivers. As time goes on layer after layer is pushed down onto each other. Slowly the sediment at the bottom turns into rock.
Types of sedimentary rock
Sandstone rocks are made form small grains of quartz and feldspar. They are mostly used as building stones and often form in layers.
Limestone rocks are made from the mineral calcite which came from the sand of evaporated seas and lakes and from sea animal shells. Limestone is used in concrete and is a common building stone for hot places.
