Igneous rocks are either formed above ground or underground and are called fire rocks. When igneous rocks are formed underground, the magma in the earth becomes trapped in small pockets. As the pockets of magma cool slowly underground, the magma becomes igneous rocks. Granite rocks are a type of igneous rock formed underground by cooling slowly in pockets trapped beneath the earth's surface. Granite is used for decorations on buildings, trim and long lasting monuments.

Igneous rocks can also be formed above ground. When volcanoes erupt the magma is forced to rise above the earth's surface. When magma is above ground, it is called lava. Igneous rocks are formed as the lava cools above ground. For example scoria rocks are igneous rocks which were formed when lava cooled quickly above ground. Scoria is a kind of glass and not a mixture of minerals.
